Basic Multiplication Facts
Knowing all basic multiplication facts is a MUST in order to succeed in math! All students should enter 5th grade knowing all facts 0-12.
|
Multiplying 3-digits by 2-digits
Multiplying 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers is a VERY importance skill for 5th grade. Students MUST be able to do these problems using the standard algorithm (the "old fashioned way").
|
For the Multiplying Game choose MULTIPLICATION. After you choose how many problems you want to play, choose 3 x 2 and click NEXT. Do NOT select only 100, only 10, multiples of 10 or multiples of 100.
|
Adding & Subtracting Decimals
Always line up your decimals when adding and subtracting so the place values stay lined up.
|
Multiply & Divide Decimals
When multiplying & dividing decimals, deal with the decimal first then ignore it and work the problem like regular.
|
Greatest Common Factor (GCF)
Knowing how to find the Great Common Factor (GCF) is an important skill because it will help when simplifying FRACTIONS. There are many different ways to find the GCF, the link show a video explanation of ONE way to find the GCF.
|
Simplifying Fractions
Knowing how to simplify fractions is a MUST by 5th grade. Most of the problems with fractions will ask for the answer to be in simplest form.
|
Improper Fractions & Mixed Numbers
There are sometimes in math when you must change an improper fraction to a mixed number or a mixed number to an improper fraction.
|
Adding & Subtracting Fractions
Adding & subtracting fractions have a similar process. Watch the videos to spot the similarities and differences.
|
Multiplying & Dividing Fractions
Multiplying & dividing fractions is a large part of the 5th grade math curriculum. Practice is the only way students will truly understand how to multiply & divide fractions.
|
Order of Operations
Order of Operations must be understood in order to work expressions.
**Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply OR Divide, Add OR Subtract! |
Writing Expressions
Writing expressions is simply turning a word problem into a number problem. However, Order of Operations needs to be understood first.
|
Finding Patterns
Finding patterns is as simple as finding how the numbers go from one to the next. It could be moving by addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
|
Converting Measurements
We will be using both customary and metric measurement units.
Customary Units
Length: inches, feet, yards, miles Capacity: fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, gallons Weight: ounces, pounds, tons Metric Units
Length: millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilometer Capacity: milliliter, liter, kiloliter Weight: milligram, gram, kilogram |
Line Plots
Line plots show how FREQUENTLY something occurs by displaying data on a number line.
|
Volume with cubes
Volume can be found by counting the number of cubes an object contains.
|
Volume
Volume can be found by multiplying
Length x Width x Height OR Base Area x Height |
Volume of Composite Figures
To find the volume of a composite figure 1)Break the figure into 2 or more rectangular prisms 2)Find the volume of each prism 3)Add those volumes together.
|
Coordinate Plane
The coordinate plane is used to plot ordered pairs.
|
2D Shapes
Two-dimensional shapes are shapes on a flat surface. Many of them were covered in 4th grade and should be an easy topic for ALL 5th graders.
|
Mean, Median, Mode, & Range
**This is a 6th Grade skill that will be covered at the end of 5th Grade.
Mean is the average of a group of numbers. Median is the middle number in a group of numbers. Mode is the number than occurs the most in a group of numbers. Range is the difference between the largest numbers and the smallest number in a group of numbers. |
